Even with Dota 2 production heavily under way, it seems 'IceFrog', the
current head DotA developer, has found the time to bring masses of new content
to the ageing game in the latest version 6.73.

The update contains 4 new
heroes, 5 new items and a massive host of balance and game changes. Though this
is not particularly new news to anyone who may follow DotA. It has been
announced recently on the Dota 2 developer forums that all these changes will be
getting transferred over swiftly to Dota 2 in the next coming patch (Usually
every Thursday).

This move is of no surprise, considering Dota 2 is a
direct clone in game mechanics and content of DotA. However it may come as
unexpected how quickly the massive amount of balance changes will make their way
over to the currently closed beta game. The effect these changes will have on
the competitive scene can not be understated. Some of the highlights include,
minor nerfs to the currently considered overpowered Anti-Mage, large changes to
Axe in attempts to see him used more, and many, many more. You can find the full
list of changes HERE, but
be warned it is very long.

In what is somewhat of a cautious move, in the
statement from Valve Developer 'Finol', he states that the update will include
“Stable/Current version switching, so tournaments will be able to run older
versions of the game until they are ready to make the switch“
. Meaning we
may not see these changes being used in competition immediately, until the
community is happy with them. IceFrog has notoriously been cautious with his
balance changes, testing them for large amounts of time before releasing them,
and not adding the new heroes to the Captains Mode to be picked in competitive
matches until much later on. The community has always been very pleased with
this and his willingness to listen, and it would appear this method of
development may be transferred over to Dota 2.

As well as the integration
of the 6.73 changes to Dota 2, the update has been teased with the release of
two more heroes. In his statement 'Finol' has openly hinted “Two Heroes will
be making their return. One gets a real charge out of bashing heads. The other
always has to get in the last word.“
. The community has quickly taken this
to mean the arrival of Spirit Breaker, a notorious public game winning hero, and
Silencer.

Lastly, great news for the
competitive scene is that the current 64 person spectator cap on games is going
to be removed, to be unlimited. It would appear Valve really want to make their
game a true hub for watching matches, and this can only mean good things for the
games future success as an eSports title.
