I'm doing an Individual Learning Project at college so i decided to do it on e-Sports, this is to kind of promote it and make people aware of e-Sports. So i thought i would blog it bit by bit as i write it up. Please give some feedback on what i could do to improve it :D
When people hear the word “sport” they automatically assume that you are talking about something like football, darts, rugby or just something that’s generally energetic. However, people could class competitive gaming as a sport, formally known as Electronic-Sports (e-Sports. In recent years the gaming industry has sky-rocketed and has become one of the medium sources for entertainment.
In 2011 the gaming industry was worth over $60 billion, this is worth more than the film industry. That is outstanding and it just shows the audience how much gaming as a whole has evolved over the past five to ten years. There are over seventy-five million hardcore gamers with the average hours playing per week being twenty-two, that is more time per week than what people spend doing things like watching TV. So why am I saying this? Why are all these statistics relevant? Well, seventy-five million hardcore gamers is such a large about of people, when you consider there are about 1,696 people who are playing American Football in the NFL. That is millions more people that are playing videos games to a “hardcore standard.” A large number of said “hardcore gamers” won’t understand what you mean when you through the word e-Sports at them. Which, in my opinion, needs to be changed and people need to realise the revolution of gamers and what there is in the world of e-Sports.
So, let us take a jump back in history to the arcade era, a time when games were new to everybody, but even from the inception they always had a competitive feel towards them with games like Donkey Kong and other various score counting games. A company called Twin Galaxies, created in 1981 by Walter Day, were notorious for keeping track of high scores on said arcade games. From this they went on to create the U.S National Video Game Team in 1983. The team ran various tournaments for people to compete in, as well as the Video Game Master in 1987; this was for the Guinness World Records. A number of other tournaments were also run by the team and by other companies including Nintendo and Blockbuster Video. The first ever televised eSports event that has been noted as a game show called “A*mazing” where two children would play a variety of Nintendo games and they would compete to win points. This game show was based in Australia.
The next era was the UNIX era, Netrek was born. It was developed as a successor to 1986’s Xtrek. Netrek was first played in the year 1988; it is an internet game that up to 16 players can play at once. It was written in almost completely cross-platform open source software. It was a game that was a combination of features from multi-directional shooters and team-based real-time strategy games. The aim of the game is to disable of destroy their opponents’ ships in real-time combat. This was the first internet team game and the first internet game to use metaservers to locate open game servers. As of 2010 it is the oldest internet game that is still being played actively.
